Why are Muscles Important?
If we did not have muscles, we wouldn't be able to do many of the things we can do today. We couldn't smile, blink, breath, move, speak, or even function. We have over 30 facial muscles. Did you know that eye muscles are the busiest muscles in the body?
Types of MusclesMuscles that bend are flexor muscles while muscles that straighten are extensor muslces. Muscles weaken when they are not excercised. Many types of excercises can increase your muscle strength.
Smooth The smooth muscle is in the digestive tract and in the walls of blood vessels. It is an involuntary muscle. Cardiac This muscle is only in the heart and is involuntary. It pumps blood throughout the body. Skeletal There are 640 skeletal muscles that are named and they make up 40% of our body weight. Skeletal muscles give us body shape. They are attached to the bones, and have layers that overlap. Superficial muscle is just below the skin, while muscles below the superficial are deep muscles. They can make hundreds of movements and often work in pairs. Skeletal muscles are voluntary. |
Affecting Muscles --Strains
A strain is an injury in which a muscle or tendon is torn because it has not been warmed up or has worked too hard. Tendinitis This is caused by exercising too much and a body cannot repair it before the next exercise. When that happens it becomes inflammed. To make it heal, you should take a long rest. Anabolic steroids These make the muscles stronger, but it causes long-term health problems. It can damage the heart, liver, kidneys, and cause high blood pressure. They can even stop bones from growing if the skeleton is immature. Anabolic steroids are illegal in many places. |
